Bento # 6 - lion head noodles

This was my first attempt at making lion head, last month. Saw it in Bento Corner. Was in a rush and forgot about the whiskers. Also didn't have the animal face puncher yet, and the animal mouth that I cut freehand turned out so cacat, decided to make a smiling mouth instead.

Contents : Leftover wonton noodles, boiled wonton, fried wonton, edamame on picks, a boy fishball, tomato ketchup in Hello Kitty container and grapes.

Girlet loved this and requested to the same everytime I packed noodles for her. The lion's face can be made from eggs or hanpen fishcake. In this bento, I used cheese but now think the blend of tastes might be strange. A cute friend thought that the edamame was petai..... haha. If I packed petai, I think the girlet will run a mile away.

Pancakes for breakfast

The kids had pancakes for breakfast on Sunday morning. Kelloggs brand Animal Pancakes. So nice, anyone knows where to buy moulds like these?

I think have four designs : elephant, gorilla and hippo, as shown below. Also have lion. The boylet liked it so much, he asked for it again this morning. But he would only eat it with butter, no maple syrup, chocolate or jam. Strange boy, huh? Don't talk about vegetables, nobody believed that I have to chase him around to convince him to eat chocolate cake!!! So have to resort to novelty items like this. He has been eating better since I got the cookie/sandwich moulds, egg moulds, fancy pasta shapes, etc...... so can consider them as good investments...... and nope, did not write this to justify my purchases.... hehe...

A musical and dressing up

Went to the Beauty and the Beast Musical today with girlet and niece. It was simply brilliant. Beautiful set, dazzling costumes, wonderful singing...... My niece remarked that she liked this more than My Fair Lady and Chicago, both from last year. I suppose this production is more age appropriate for them. Girlet thought this was a cinema. When the lights went off, she asked for the popcorn. Haha...

Girlet won a prize in costume contest. She was so tickled when they announced her name through the intercom. I was surprised that there weren't more kids dressed up. Girlet absolutely loves costume dressing.

Here she is, at Tokyo Disneyland last year, posing with Belle wearing her Belle top . After that, she asked if she could wear princess dresses too. She dithered for more than half an hour, deciding between Aurora's pink and Belle's yellow dresses. In the end, d'hubby bought her both. (you can tell who spoils her). Since then she's been 'volunteering' to wear the dresses any chance she could, even for a simple dinner outside. Had a Princess birthday party in January this year. The entertainer came as a prince. Some of her friends came dressed up as various princesses.

More on the things I bought at Daiso, Singapore

My ex-colleague complained that she can't visualise the things I bought at Daiso. Gave her my standard reply "too many, too lazy", but she's not settling for that. Since I'm not lugging all my things over to her house, and she doesn't want to drive so far to mine.... I've gotta concede to the 8 months pregnant lady. So this post is for you, LS.

Small snack box.
Various picks -plastic, wooden, animal / fun shapes.

Small forks and spoons - animal shapes.

Sausage cutter - cut a tulip shape in the sausage. Heart and Star egg mould - see earlier posts.

Various cookie cutters, can use to cut bread, pancake, eggs etc.

More dinosaur cutters for the boylet.... I already owned a few. My defense was these are of different sizes. And the boylet insisted that the top one is an Iguanodon, which we didn't have yet.


Mini metal cutters - can also use to cut carrots, cucumber etc

Stencils - eg. remove the plastic bear face, then scatter meat floss, seaweed, sesame seed etc to form a shape of bear on white rice. For my super picky boylet. Got 3 pics, bear, bunny and elephant.

Tamagoyaki pan - for frying eggs (rolled up to form a pinwheel). Because of its rectangular shape, useful for rollups, as compared to a round frying pan. Besides eggs, can make pancakes rolls/ pinwheels.

Small containers for butter, mayonnaise, ketchup, or other thicker sauce....

Food cups in various shapes, colours, and materials. Check out the silicon ones which was used for the jelly in earlier post. Those can be used in the oven for baking cupcakes.

Food dividers - put between food so they don't come in contact with each other. Also to prettify the bento box.

Oshibori - wet towel and case, for wiping hands.


Plastic disposable plates - just because so cute, mah....


Cutting sheet - with measurement on it. Now I can cut my maki / rolls into equal sizes.... hehe...
I bought the hamtaro mouse design, while my sis got the pig.

Bento belts - elastic bands for bento boxes.

Silicon Moulds for pancakes or eggs. Put in on the frying pan, pour your pancake mix or crack an egg into the mould, and there you have it.... a pancake / egg in the shape of the mould.

Now some boring stuff....... food wrap / polystrene wrap of various sizes.

Anti-bacterial sheets - to keep food from going bad.

Also got some small containers for liquid sauce, but couldn't find them at photo time. The kids probably thought that they are toys for them to play with.... hehe...they do look like toys.

That's the gist of it. LS, you're going to be busy with the new baby the next few months, but hopefully you can find time to make bento for WW. *_*

Bento # 5

Another bento from last month. Rice (claypot chicken rice style but in rice cooker), moulded into bear shapes. Used peas and carrots for the eyes and mouths but can't see clearly in this pic.

Further items : shredded chicken under the rice, leftover vegies from dinner, teochew fishball and chinese sausage. Tomato sauce in Hello Kitty container, some fish biscuit and cubed cheese for snack, and grapes.

Packed too much as girlet only managed to eat half of the bento. Reheated the food when she came home and she finished it for tea.

Bento # 11 - mini onigiri faces

Another bento for girlet. Mini onigiri faces made with mini triangular rice mould, and seaweed; steamed beans, and shiumai (girl's fav and bought earlier in the morn). Also grapes and the last of the pandan jelly. Not shown - sweet sauce for shiumai and picks.

Girlet named the onigiri after herself and siblings.
Girlet : The one in blue cup is me 'cos I'm the biggest and have long hair. The middle, short hair one is boylet and the yellow cup one is babylet. She's got more hair than boylet, you know?

Haha.... didn't intentionally set out to do that. Funny how the bento meals evolve by themselves sometimes.

Bento # 4

A bento from last month, depicting a scene from the family life. Me taking the girlet and her dog for a walk, and feeding her rabbit fruits. Unfortunately that was the day her tooth became loose ( a first), so she couldn't bite into the apple. Glad this photo is dated, so I can record the milestone.


Raisin bread with kaya and cheese, green jelly, laughing cow cheese, rabbit apples and papaya on picks (b4 getting the cute picks from Daiso).

Boylet's Birthday Party on 21st June.

Last Saturday, we had a birthday party for the boylet. Already celebrated twice for him this year. Once with his grandparents, uncle and aunties.

But he said "I want a real party, got games one". Since his big sis also had a 'real party' each year til she's six, no choice. Wouldn't want him to compare and think we favour the eldest. Already got less photos, videos, etc than her.

Anyway, the party was held at Caterpillar, in Sri Hartamas.The place was beautifully decorated with elephant, lion and hippo faces on the walls. Vines, branches and leaves were hung from the ceiling, further adding to the African Safari theme.

The two entertainers were dressed as a caterpillar (of course) and a rooster. It was a tough crowd but eventually the kids warmed up after the dancing, musical statues and acting as animals. Here they are as elephants.

It was a yummy chocolate cake, very chocolatey and not too sweet.



Snack time. Predictably, the don't-like-to-eat boylet went straight for the mini choc cupcake, and passed the rest to kakak to finish.

Mummy had fun too, by not having to do any work. No worrying, no cooking, no cleaning up later...... yay.

Bento # 10 - sandwich rolls

For the girlet, decided to make sandwich rolls instead of using cookie cutter. (Fresh in mind from allthingspurple's recent bento). So lunch is bread, ham and cheese rolls, half a heart shaped egg, leftover fried wonton, grapes, and pandan jelly. Still took me 30 mins to boil eggs, make sandwiches, heat up and assemble. Need to work on the speed part.



Also need to work on the portion part too, as the girlet complained that I packed too much food. She didn't have time to finish. Came home and asked kakak to feed her the remaining..... so spoilt....

Transportation Themed Lunch

The boylet requested for jam sandwich for lunch. So decided to make it a transportation theme, with sandwiches cut out with car, ship and airplane cutters, and car shaped boiled egg. Also sneaked some cheese into the sandwich. Was very happy the picky boylet finished all his food, although had to mash the yolk and mixed with mayonnaise first. Yep, no vegies. Just grapes for dessert. One battle at a time is enough, thank you.

My kids love eggs, so been making a lot for them. Below is the car, rabbit and flower eggs. Nope, don't have a flower egg mould. Just decided to rename the star egg mould as flower egg mould, as that was what it kept producing....hehe...
